This book is a collection of some of my personal favorite stories that are 98% true. I chose the most charged, energized, and quite frankly, in my opinion some of the more strange things that have happened to me. For some weird reason, I feel that the world needs to know who I am, where I come from and the thoughts that are in my head.
I have chosen a sort of sophomoric, A.D.D. style of writing on purpose mainly because it is really easy for me to write like that and its the fastest way I can think of to get this book finished. Plus its a style that I think a good sized chunk of people will relate to. It is organized into four parts, that I consider to be pivotal in my life. Though it may seem that this book is a vanity project, and in many ways it is, it’s really supposed to be funny. Many of the subjects are not ‘technically’ funny, but I have a strange sense of humor and to ME they’re funny. Hopefully, more than one person will laugh out loud to at least one of my jokes. If not, then, I guess the jokes on me.
Anyway, the parts are organized in four sections, with part one being about growing up in Hanover N.H. in the 70′s and early 80′s. I had to whittle down just my best stories, because I can think of at least 20 more in each section, so, believe it or not, SOME editing has transpired. Even though to many readers it will seem like this entire book was written off the cuff, in one draft, with no proof reading, or any actual work other than just ranting and raving. However, there are some rants and raves, but they have been carefully crafted to be related to the actual stories and not just adding more CO2 to the already overburden ionosphere.
Part two is about a few of my best experiences in Boston going to college at Berklee. Not the one up north in California, but the one named after Lawrence Berk who started a pretty cool music school way back in the 50′s; maybe you’ve heard of it? Quincy Jones went there, so did Steely Dan and even John Mayer.
Part three is about my adventures in Hollywood. Driving to Hollywood, finding work, doing gigs, playing, teaching, touring, going insane; its all in there. And part four is about my life in Los Angeles after I got sober. You know, that means to stop the drugs and alcohol and all that FUN behavior. This is not a 12-Step approved book and I don’t represent AA or any other fellowship in this book, though, I would like to say that I would be dead, in jail, or clinically insane if it weren’t for AA and all the other programs that I have participated in.
Remember now, this is a FUNNY book, and has been carefully designed to make you laugh, out loud, more than once. Every story has a comedic thread throughout, and though it may seem like a 14-year-old man-boy wrote this in his AA journal in his first 6 weeks of sobriety, that simply is NOT the case. This book has been slaved over for 5 years and has been edited three times and a lot of money, time, and pain has been invested in this…dare I say…masterpiece? I want people to say that this book belongs on the same shelf as Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Richard Bach. Or at least say that it’s in the same genre. Or maybe people will say its better, why should I shoot low? My guess is that most people won’t get it, and only a few enlightened individuals (kind of like in the Emperors New Clothes story), will have the vision, insight, and intelligence to understand the comedic genius. Or maybe some people will like it and others won’t, kind of like how most creative things are.
The main goal of this book is to spread a little joy, maybe make some people laugh and have a good time. If, for some reason, you get a little more understanding of your own life, or see something that raises your awareness some, then that’s just extra credit.
Part Four is after I get sober in Hollywood and all the fun and games and adventure is included, for free. You might even be amazed at what you might find in this book. Don’t forget that sometimes we can find deep meaning and spirituality in some of the most random and superficial places; like Hollywood California.
